Michael Moore's Ignorance

On CNBC yesterday afternoon, Michael Moore was interviewed by the lunchtime team at CNBC. Beside the fact that they were extremely soft on him, I found one question very telling. They asked him how he has invested the wealth gained from his successful movies. His reply was that he keeps it in a savings account and some U.S. Savings Bonds.

He said that he has never owned even one share of stock and he doesn't put his money in things he doesn't understand. So, my question is how can he do a movie judging Capitalism when he claims to have no first hand knowledge of the most basic component of capitalism? Public ownership is the cornerstone of the capitalist concept, yet he admits openly to having never experienced the risks or rewards. Just seems like he is coming from a point of view of ignorance, but what do I know.

  1. Michael Moore is a seriously misguided, uneducated person who has been able to use an innate ability to make films that touch the masses' fear, ignorance, and need to blame someone for their troubles to escape his upbringing. He was raised in Flint, Michigan, the nerd, outcast son of an auto worker. He grew up and was schooled in the '60's and indoctrinated in the anti-establishment, anti-corporate, liberal thinking of the time. When the auto industry collapsed, he became all too willing to lash out at corporations (GM) and "fat cats" for the destruction of the city he grew up in. He dropped out of college, spent only a single day of his life working in a productive job (one day at a GM plant), and was fired from the only employment he ever had (editor at Mother Jones). If he hadn't figured out how to use film to tap into the disassociation and abandonment of personal accountability all around him as American industry sagged and American government went conservative, he'd be working the night shift at Burger King and sitting on a ripped couch, playing video games, covered in potato chips and food scraps every day.

Instead, he is the voice (lens?) of millions of other ignorant, uneducated, disaffected people who don't understand forms of government, don't understand the major issues of our society, and have neither the know-how nor the will to become productive members. He exploits an all-too-willing set of Americans who have grown up in a "blame" society, a society that has rejected personal accountability, rejected the pursuit of excellence and the rewards that come from achieving it, and expects "them" [his view of corporations, government, and "the establishment"] to both stop what they're doing AND provide handouts, bailouts, and a comfortable standard of living without allowing hard work, intelligence, and pursuit of profit to be parts of the inputs.

The shame of it is that this uneducated buffoon has become a voice and an influence.

  2. Thanks for the commentary John,

It is amazing how he can gain such a following while having little or no supporting information. His arguements are poorly thought out and are usually defended with very selective anecdotal evidence.
